CCTV Buying Guide: Resolution, IP Rating, POE, NDAA and Cloud Explained

CCTV spec sheets are full of acronyms. This guide explains the ones that actually affect your footage and your security, so you can choose the right camera with confidence.

Resolution (MP)

Measured in megapixels. A 4MP camera (2560×1440) captures noticeably sharper detail than older 2MP units — enough to read faces and number plates within range. Higher resolution helps most where you need to identify, not just observe.

IP rating (weatherproofing)

The two digits describe protection against dust and water. IP67 means fully dust-tight and able to withstand temporary immersion — the right choice for outdoor cameras exposed to Indian monsoons and dust. Indoor-only units don't need it.

POE (Power over Ethernet)

POE (IEEE 802.3af) carries power, data and recording over a single Cat-6 cable — no separate power adapter, no clutter. It simplifies installation dramatically, especially across multiple cameras.

WDR and IR night vision

WDR (wide dynamic range) keeps faces lit even when bright sunlight floods a doorway. IR night vision delivers clean monochrome footage in the dark — look for usable range (e.g. up to 30 m).

NDAA compliance

NDAA Section 889 compliance means the camera excludes restricted vendors — increasingly required for tenders and enterprise procurement. If you bid for government or large-enterprise work, insist on it.

Cloud vs DVR/NVR storage

Traditional setups record to an on-premise DVR/NVR — a single box that can fail, be stolen or fill up. Cloud storage keeps footage off-site, encrypted and accessible from anywhere, with role-based access. For multi-site businesses, cloud removes a fragile single point of failure.

Camera security itself

IP cameras are a common target for botnets. Look for cameras that are isolated from the public internet — Lend'L's Camera Cyber Lockdown blocks open ports and inbound connections so a camera can't be used against you.
